Cycling4Gaza:

400km Fundraising Cycle for the Children of Gaza

September, 2018 – On October 3rd, cyclists from all over the world will come together for four days to cycle 400km from Boston to NYC in an effort to raise awareness and nearly £200,000,   in funds that will go directly to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a reputable humanitarian charity operating in the Gaza Strip. Women’s Empowerment, Community Rehabilitation targeting disabilities among children and adults, and Mental Health support are the three main projects of the fundraising cycle. Our continued support is critical at this time as UNRWA faces severe funding cuts. The US withdrawal of life saving funds has resulted in the loss of 30% ($300million) of UNRWA’s annual budget used to support the civil services, healthcare and education in the West Bank and Gaza. Today, UNRWA educates 500,689 children, feeds more than 1 million refugees and operates 143 primary health facilities with over 9 million patient visits; all of which are now in jeopardy. Our continued actions and support are vital for education, healthcare and capacity building projects in Gaza. Each area of action is developed to provide the tools and systems needed to sustainably drive change in the Gaza Strip, an area that continues to suffer from lack of resources and basic human rights. The women's empowerment project aims to provide 1,890 women with one to one counselling sessions; the community rehabilitation project will allow 200 Palestinians with disabilities to attend 2 training workshops focused on capacity building, communication skills and self-confidence; and the mental health support program will engage 300 active members of the Gaza community in an attempt to build up the existing system. Cycling4Gaza celebrates its 10th year in 2018, an annual fundraising cycle that in total has cycled over 3,000km in ten countries: United Kingdom, France, Italy, Jordan, Turkey, Germany, United States, Netherlands, Norway, and Spain. Since its inception Cycling4Gaza has raised over £1.5 million for vital and sustainable healthcare and education projects in Gaza. These projects have impacted the lives of over 14,000 children and 8,000 families and community members in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon’s Palestinian refugee camps. The backbone of the initiative has been a group of volunteers dedicated to raise awareness about the ongoing blockade on the Gaza Strip and resources in the promotion of human rights “I have always believed that individuals that can make a difference should... After visiting the Gaza Strip in March, those words could not have meant more. The people living in Gaza, despite their dire circumstances and limited access to all basic human needs, simply give; they give love and support to their families, they give care and aid to their friends and neighbors and they give their lives for their freedom. How can we not do more?” said Zara Hannoun, the head of Cycling4Gaza. “Joining the C4G committee made me realize my enthusiasm and dedication towards working for a cause, that I define success by putting a smile on a child’s face, and gave me a sense of accomplishment from bringing people together to make a difference. C4G continuously engages increasing numbers of people to support an important humanitarian cause and the best part is - it provides children and adults in Gaza with some tools and essentials to a better quality of life. Moved and inspired by the impact that this initiative has on everyone involved, C4G has pushed me to pursue a career that has a social impact. I feel both proud and honored to be a part of this initiative!” affirmed Dina Dajani, who has been at the core of the initiative for the last three years. The fundraising cycle will begin from Dayville, Connecticut, on October 4th at 10:00am, cycling 89km to New London, Connecticut. From there, on day 2 the 70km cycle will be to Stoney-Brook, in New York. On day 3, an 87km cycle to Staten Island and on Sunday October 7th, the final day of the cycle, will be a 100km ride to NYC, aiming to finish at the UN building at 14:00 followed by Washington Square at 15:00.... read more

IPNGO - The reality of the health needs of the Palestinian people

Gaza Strip has been a permanent threat to the Zionist entity since it was declared in 1948. Therefore, the occupation has forced its people to live under extremely difficult conditions since it took over in 1967, but it has become more severe and cruel for the past 12 years now, when it declared Gaza an open prison. Where more than a million living various aspects of life, making their reality to unbearable hell. This siege was one of the most difficult and arrogant on the health, economic and food sectors, preventing the most basic elements of life by isolating them from the simplest needs as medical care. With the siege suffocating the densely populated area ,in which Gaza strip is one of the highest populated density in the world has made the reality of the health sector critical , as the life of patients in the health sector is threatened by a severe shortage of drugs , furthermore, preventive and therapeutic drugs which is necessary for patients suffering from cancer, diabetes, heart and arteries diseases, and dialysis patients that Any shortage or delaying in the treatment plan can affect the patients severely.

Electricity and medical care:
In the case of Fuel supplies and power cuts that last of more than 6_12 hours per day and the instability of the energy supply needed by hospitals for the continued operation of intensive care units and surgeries, threatened the lives of patients that might lead them to an extreme risk.
as for the equipment in hospitals, 60% of these equipment need constant maintenance or renewal or to be disposed of, without working on the equipment improvement or reconstruction, also the Shortage in the simplest medical supplies and their quantities.

Clean water and nutrition:
The population has suffered from food insecurity and malnutrition, as well as the deterioration of sewage systems due to the shortage of materials and supplies for the sewage and sewage networks, which resulted in the deterioration of the only groundwater reservoir in the sector and the damage of water and sewage pipes. The lack of drinking water suitable to human usage due to the lack of electricity, also the restrictions on basic chemicals needed for the work of desalination plants. The United Nations estimate that 90% of the water of the sector is unsafe for human use and it may cause the spread of serious diseases such as typhoid and watery diarrhea.
The reports indicate that 15% of children under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition while anemia affects 58.6% of school children, anemia also affects 68.1% children aged 9-12 months.
The continues stage of war that Gaza strip suffered from consumed large amount of medical needs in equipment and drugs for treatment , several medical facilities had shortage in several essentials for proper medical need , this needs were increasing due to the large numbers of injuries and the critical cases that need surgeries and full medical care, some of these injuries were forced to leave the hospitals and medical centers before finishing the treatment , some patients had to buy their own medicine with a higher price because it was not available in the hospitals , where others has difficulties in buying the medicines because of the economic situation.

In addition to the birth of about ten out of every 1000 Palestinian children with diseases and congenital malformations because of the chemical substances and explosive barrels that Israel has thrown in very large quantities during the wars on Gaza strip, in which these substances are internationally prohibited.
In addition, the siege on Gaza has enabled the newly graduated doctors from having proper training outside Gaza, also forbidding other medical aid doctors from entering the strip leading in a shortage in medical help. The siege caused difficulties for injured Palestinian to leave in order to get better medical care, some of the casualties died before receiving treatment because of the refusal to give them passes to travel for medical treatment.
This difficult stage that the health and medical sector suffer from reveals the levels of shortage and suffering that the million people living in Gaza will face , affecting their lives in the near future , the world around them should make a move to prevent this humanitarian situation from exploding , people living in Gaza are human and they deserve their basic human needs like many other people living in the world , getting the right medical and health care by providing medicines and medical equipment needed for hospitals and health centers special the one needed for chronical diseases such hospitals treating cancers and dialysis , helping in improving and providing medical labs , surgery rooms , and the continues maintenance for medical equipment, providing fuel and electricity needed for surgery rooms and intensive care units , working on providing supplement energy sources , also helping with providing medicine to poor family for the medicine needed or giving free medicines.
